Public Engagement and Outreach

I am passionate about knowledge exchange and outreach, evidenced by my LJMU Faculty of Science Excellence in Knowledge Exchange award and my role as School External Engagement lead. Since 2013 I have been a STEM ambassador which has enabled me to deliver assemblies and career events to schools and colleges across North West. I developed and delivered an interactive cancer: from bench to bedside station at Big Bang North West, a STEM celebration for school children enabling them to discover STEM based careers via fun, interactive activities.

Internationally I have been a leader on ‘Girlguiding Girls Take Action: The Gambia project’ to deliver peer learning sessions to schools and community groups in Gambia in collaboration with The Gunjur Project.  In 2019, LJMU donated 46 microscopes which I fundraised and shipped to Gambia for distribution at The University of Gambia, local colleges and health clinics. Learners there were trained to deliver sessions on Malaria, health and hygiene, basic first aid alongside fun, hands on practical science sessions. This empowers young women whilst supporting UN SDG5– gender equality.

ImageIn 2020, I organised the first LJMU Girlguiding Merseyside STEM day showcasing the variety of our UG/PG courses alongside a programme of activities to celebrate women in STEM. The event was attended by 400 young people (5-18) and their leaders, supported by LJMU volunteers from across the faculties of Science and Engineering.  The event reinforced our role as a civic university, supported widening participation activities and inspire future scientists and engineers.  In 2013, I was recognised by Girlguiding North West England as a real role model and interviewed in 2022 by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) Europe region for their ‘Women in Science series’.

My informal STEM initiatives resulted in an invitation to National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement in 2022 where I contributed to a developing future policies session. These ongoing activities can support KEF public and community engagement returns.

May 2023, I organised LJMU’s inaugural Pint of Science offering hosted by Murphy’s Gin.  The event held over 3 nights showcased research across the Faculty of Science.

In June 2023, I returned to The University of Liverpool (UoLiv).  I am currently a member of the ISMIB and Faculty of Health and Life Sciences public engagement groups at the University of Liverpool.

Sun Safety

As a STEM ambassador and external engagement lead I have had the pleasure working with Skcin.

I help to train student Skcin ambassadors.  We help local schools to achieve their sun safe schools accreditation by visiting primary schools to tell the children about George, the sun safe superstar.
